Background on AHIC Successor, Inc.
In August 2007, HHS issued a White Paper and, in December 2007, a Notice of Funding Availability (NoFA) for an entity or a set of entities that would “design, establish, and operate the American Health Information Community (AHIC) Successor.” The NoFA and White Paper called for accelerating and coordinating current AHIC interoperability initiatives, including harmonizing and certifying standards of health IT; prioritizing stakeholder requirements for nationwide health IT interoperability; advancing the harmonization of technology standards and policies; enabling the NHIN (a “network of networks”); and addressing certification. The AHIC Successor organization was created under a grant from ONC to achieve these goals, and stakeholder leadership devised a two-stage process to accomplish the transition. The first stage, which combined the efforts of four planning groups to design the AHIC Successor, concluded with the AHIC Successor’s official incorporation in July, 2008. Stage Two involved establishing the AHIC Successor's Governance and organizational structure, which concluded with the announcement of the inaugural Board of Directors on September 23 2008. The transition from AHIC to AHIC Successor, Inc. was completed with the Board's first meeting on November 13, 2008. The AHIC Successor is an independent, sustainable public-private enterprise that brings together the best of the public, non-profit and private sectors into a trusted, purpose-driven organization for the creation and use of a secure interoperable nationwide health information system.
