New Board of Directors Announced
On September 23, 2008, AHIC Successor announced the appointment of its Board of Directors. The formation of the Board of Directors is an important milestone in establishing AHIC Successor as an independent public-private partnership. Board members represent leadership from across the health, IT, academic and consumer sectors and will serve as a unified voice representing many member segments of the health care community.

AHIC Successor, Inc. has been founded on the principle that broad participation from all parts of the community will be critical to successful adoption of a nationwide, interoperable health information system. We know that in order to accomplish our mission, we will need to collaborate across all segments of the health care continuum. Moreover, the strength and productivity of our organization will come primarily through the active engagement and support of our membership. We are counting on our members to bring their leadership and experience to the task of developing and implementing strategies for the successful integration and use of health IT into our health care system. As a practical matter, that will mean playing an active role in committees and workgroups. Moving forward, we will rely on that broad-based commitment and participation to catalyze the transformation in health care that will ultimately deliver better care to patients.
Board Selection Process
- Selection of AHIC Successor Board members was conducted according to a systematic and participative process in order to gain leadership and insights from across the health care, IT, academic, and consumer communities.
- It is important to note that the Governance Planning Group convened to design the Board of AHIC Successor did not recommend that the Board be representational, other than the two representatives of consumer organizations.
- The recently-appointed Board members hold staggered terms to ensure continuity, and in 2009 we will be soliciting new nominees for five Board seats. Every year, therefore, there is a new opportunity to enhance the breadth and diversity of the Board.
- The 6 members of the Nominating Committee were drawn from each of the planning groups and also included one consumer organization and one federal liaison. Each candidate was evaluated for each of the 4 criteria below, which were developed through an open process and discussed on public teleconference calls. The Nominating Committee then presented a slate of 30 candidates to the incorporators, who made the final determination. The four criteria were:
- Have demonstrated expertise as a member of a Board of Directors or similar executive-level qualifications
- Have demonstrated the ability to work in organizations by structured consensus and with multiple stakeholders
- Recognized for thought leadership on industry trends and developments
- Experience defining and re-evaluating the strategies by which the organization fulfills its mission and demonstration of the oversight and implementation of the strategies.
The health care sector is complex, and encompasses a wide diversity of disciplines, specialties, and professions. As a result, AHIC Successor, as a public-private partnership, needs to engage many different communities on an ongoing basis in a highly proactive and collaborative process.
As a practical matter, our organization will grow and thrive only through the active participation of our membership. We hope to have every discipline and profession that is affected by health IT at the table, working closely with each other in committees and workgroups as part of addressing the many challenges inherent in our mission.
