Gathering Public Input

Under a cooperative agreement, AHIC Successor leadership chartered four AHIC Successor Planning Groups to help shepherd the creation of a governance structure, business sustainability model, membership model and transition plan. From March through June, 2008 AHIC Successor held a series of three public meetings centered on soliciting public feedback for the transition to the successor organization. The meetings brought together stakeholders from across the nation to make recommendations on designing and establishing the successor organization.

The purpose and scope of this new organization as defined by the Planning Groups is summarized below:

  • Accelerate the adoption of interoperable health IT by ensuring the availability of harmonized, coordinated, up-to-date standards and rigorous conformance testing through certification.
  • Prioritize stakeholder requirements for health IT interoperability.
  • Advance health information policies and technical approaches that promote the successor’s vision and purpose and protect confidentiality, privacy, and security, consistent with the policies established by HHS and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Oversee and facilitate the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN – a network-of-networks).

AHIC Successor, Inc. was incorporated on July 17, 2008 and the inaugural Board of Directors was announced on September 23, 2008. The transition from AHIC to AHIC Successor, Inc. was completed with the Board's first meeting on November 13, 2008. Over the coming months, the Board of Directors will continue to mature the organization, setting direction for membership outreach and putting in place committees and workgroups to further the goal of nationally harmonizing health IT standards and improving the health of all Americans.
