Working to Establish the AHIC Successor

Activities are underway to establish a Successor to the American Health Information Community (AHIC) – transitioning the nationwide focal point for health information interoperability from a government advisory group to a public-private organization. The team of LMI Government Consulting and The Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution is working under a cooperative agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services to convene stakeholders for this effort. Our goal is an orderly transition that will maintain and even accelerate nationwide initiatives aimed at using information technology to enable improvements in the quality and efficiency of health care in the U.S.

Nominations are currently being solicited for highly-qualified, executive-level individuals from the health care community to serve on the AHIC Successor’s Board of the Directors. This is another step in the process of establishing an independent and sustainable public-private partnership to continue the work of the original, federally-chartered AHIC in the private sector.

Assembling a Board of Directors

The AHIC Successor will be instrumental in drawing a roadmap for successful health IT adoption that promotes interoperability through strong standards, while ensuring confidentiality, privacy, and security for patients. Selection of its 21-member Board of Directors is key to creating the new organization. The Board will serve as a unified voice representing many member segments of the health care community, and will be comprised of a majority of at-large members as well as representational members, including consumers and the federal government. The deadline for submitting candidates is Monday, August 4 at 5 p.m. EST.

Gathering Public Input

From March through June, 2008 the AHIC Successor (A2) organization held a series of three public meetings centered on developing an incorporated public-private entity to transition the work of the American Health Information Community organization upon its sunset in 2009. The meetings brought together AHIC Successor Planning Group members and stakeholders from across the nation to report on Planning Group progress and recommendations in designing and establishing a Successor organization.
