AHIC Calls on Public for Board of Directors Nominations
Read more
From March through June, 2008 the AHIC Successor (A2) organization held a series of three public meetings centered on developing an incorporated public-private entity to transition the work of the American Health Information Community organization upon its sunset in 2009. The meetings brought together AHIC Successor Planning Group members and stakeholders from across the nation to report on Planning Group progress and recommendations in designing and establishing a Successor organization.
The meetings focused on ensuring that the resulting organization represents the broadest spectrum of health information stakeholders.
Public Input on A2 Governance
A2 leadership and Planning Group members are currently designing the A2 governance structure and working toward establishing A2 as an incorporated entity, with full incorporation and the initial Board of Directors anticipated in September 2008.
On July 2, 2008 the AHIC Successor Organization (A2) held two identical public teleconferences to discuss the draft A2 Board of Directors selection process. During the meeting, LMI-Brookings and A2 Planning Group members shared their opinions regarding the process, and other A2 stakeholders participated in a listen-only capacity.
Building from the Governance Planning Group recommendations, the June 4 public meeting, the two calls with all Planning Group members, and public comments, we have refined the board nomination process. Some of the changes include:
- Broadening the qualification of a Board member from having previous board experience to someone who has similar qualifications;
- Maintaining a workable and effective board size with 21 members in the first year then down to 18 members for the second year. Three seats would be reserved for the Incorporators for only for the first year to ensure continuity of leadership;
- Designating two seats for the federal government (selection to be coordinated by the Office of National Coordinator), with the longest staggered term possible; and
- Designating two seats for consumers (selection to be generated from public applications), with the longest staggered term possible.
A2 appreciates the contributions of the participants in this important step toward creating the A2 governance structure. We collected public comments on the Board of Directors selection process via the AHIC Successor Web site through July 8, 2008.
