Overview
The efforts to develop interoperable health information technology have realized significant gains since President George W. Bush issued an executive order in April 2004 announcing his commitment to using health IT to reduce medical errors, increase efficiency, and give consumers and physicians better information. In response to the executive order, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) created the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in 2004 and launched several initiatives to provide foundational support for adopting and using health IT. These initiatives include the Health Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP), the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), the Health Information Privacy and Security Collaboration (HISPC), and four prototype architectures for a nationwide health information network (NHIN).
In 2005, HHS Secretary Michael O. Leavitt created the American Health Information Community (AHIC), a federal advisory body of public-and private-sector leaders, to make recommendations to the Secretary about how to accelerate adoption of interoperable health IT in a smooth, market-led way. From inception, AHIC was conceived as an interim organization that would sunset by December 2008, giving way to a new, public-private partnership. AHIC Successor Inc. was incorporated on July 17, 2008. On September 23, 2008 the inaugural Board of Directors was announced. On November 12, 2008 AHIC held its final meeting, and on November 13, 2008 AHIC Successor’s inaugural Board held its first meeting. This historic milestone finalized the transition of AHIC’s activities to the public-private AHIC Successor partnership. AHIC Successor's Board of Directors consists of a highly qualified team of public and private healthcare leaders representing for-profit, not-for profit, and Federal Government interests. This expert panel of health care professionals bring vast healthcare, IT, standardization, certification, and board-level executive management credentials to bear on solving the many challenges posed in developing interoperability among healthcare providers and other industry partners.
